What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychotherapist?
When considering seeking help for your mental wellbeing, it can be difficult to tell the difference between a psychologist and a psychotherapist. Both work with the human mind and help people navigate life's challenges, but there are some key differences in their training, approach and methods.
Education and background
Psychologist:
A psychologist has a university degree in psychology, typically a master's degree (cand.psych.), which takes five years. Afterwards, psychologists can take a license and possibly specialist training if they want to specialize further in a specific field, such as clinical psychology or neuropsychology. Psychologists often work with diagnostics, testing and evidence-based treatment methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy.
Psychotherapist:
A psychotherapist has undergone long-term psychotherapeutic training, typically lasting 4-5 years, on top of a relevant basic education in areas such as pedagogy, social work or nursing. Psychotherapists often have a practice-oriented approach and focus on talk therapy based on relationships, emotions and personal experiences.

Approach and methods
Psychologists often use evidence-based methods and take a scientific approach to mental health. Many psychologists work with specific diagnoses such as anxiety, depression and trauma, using tests and standardized treatment methods.
Psychotherapists work primarily with talk therapy and often have a more holistic and experiential approach. They help clients understand and process their emotions, relationships and life experiences. Psychotherapy can be based on different approaches, such as body therapy, gestalt therapy or psychodynamic therapy.
In Stærkt Sind we work with NLP psychotherapy, which is an evidence-based approach that rests on solid psychological principles. NLP is built on four pillars: Existentialism, structuralism, constructivism and cybernetics - all grounded in gestalt psychology. The therapy is based on phenomenology and uses psychotherapeutic strategies to create lasting change. This means that we work with both how you experience your world and how we can restructure inappropriate patterns of thought and patterns of thought and behavior to improve your well-being and quality of life.
Who should you choose?
The choice between a psychologist and a psychotherapist depends on what you need. If you have a psychiatric diagnosis and need a clinical assessment or structured treatment, a psychologist may be the right choice. If you are seeking a more experiential and conversational approach to personal development, trauma or life crises, a psychotherapist may be a good option.
